Crowdfunding is a hot topic at the moment. Many businesses are now bypassing the traditional route of bank-lending as it often just isn’t up to speed with today’s fast paced business environment.
Crowdfunding is a growing phenomenon that brings together businesses and investors via very efficient websites. Put simply, crowdfunding allows businesses to set out a business idea along with a funding target and deadline. Investors can then donate between £1 and several thousand, receiving an investment return via interest payments or goods of a comparable value.
Crowdfunding is gaining momentum throughout the UK, with the local business angel network Halo recently reporting that it was worth £1.7billion in the UK last year, with around 4% of small business funding being raised through this channel.
Businesses typically find that crowdfunding offers a much quicker and less onerous way of raising funds, although interest rates can often be higher than high street banks, depending on credit profile.
At RBL, we can help you decide the most appropriate way to fund your business. We regularly deal with the major crowdfunders, as well as banks and other finance providers. We also have expert advisors on hand to help you put together a strategic business plan, assist you with funding applications and make sure your business makes the most of the funding it receives.
If you would like our help and advice please get in touch at info@rossboyd.co.uk
We look forward to hearing from you and getting you in with the ‘in crowd’.

The most recent publication of the annual European Football Rich-List has garnered many a headline, including how Real Madrid have done it again and gone and claimed top spot for the tenth year in a row! The list is made up of publicly available information and uses Clubs’ total revenue as the measure of wealth.
However, this isn’t the only way you can measure the relative wealth of a business. Net profit, cash-flow or net assets are also great indicators. There is a well-known saying that “turnover is vanity, profit is sanity but cash is reality” and this has real relevance for many small businesses still struggling to recover from the recession.
So let’s have a look at how viewing business wealth from different angle changes how profitable they really are! We’ve looked at how the Top 10 richest European football clubs compare when using alternative measures of wealth. So let’s see how it changes things….
| Ranking | Rich List | Net Profit | Net assets |
| Real Madrid | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Manchester United | 2 | 5 | 3 |
| Bayern Munich | 3 | 3 | 4 |
| Barcelona | 4 | 2 | 2 |
| Paris Saint Germain | 5 | 10 | 10 |
| Manchester City | 6 | 9 | 7 |
| Chelsea | 7 | 4 | 6 |
| Arsenal | 8 | 6 | 5 |
| Liverpool | 9 | 7 | 9 |
| Juventus | 10 | 8 | 8 |
So apart from Real Madrid, all the other clubs have different rankings depending on how you assess their wealth. Most striking is the shift in position for Paris Saint Germain, occupying 5th place on the rich list when measured by Revenue, slumps all the way to last place when assessed on profitability and net assets.
The table really underlines the importance of properly understanding what information matters when you’re making informed commercial decisions. Whether that’s assessing a potential business acquisition or just understanding how your business is really performing, having the most appropriate financial information available is what’s important. Here at RBL we are experts in working with SME businesses to ensure their accounting systems generate the information that is right for them, and they have clear growth business plans. So why not get in touch with Sarah-Jane Valentine at Ross Boyd Ltd on 02033 977 755 to book in for a free consultation and make sure your company is at the top of the Premier League.
Revised guidance in relation to contingent assets for 2015/2016
By Brian Stewart, Associate Director
The Pension Protection Fund recognises certain types of contingent assets in its calculation of the PPF levy, including guarantees given by related companies which are known as ‘Type A contingent assets’.
Some recent important changes resulting from the PPF’s recent determination regarding the 2015/16 levy are as follows:
- Trustees now need to give a more robust certificate regarding the Guarantor’s ability to honour the guarantee. The certificate is now required to be in positive terms (unlike prior years) and requires the trustees to certify a fixed cash sum (‘the realisable recovery’).
- Broadly speaking the amount which should be certified is the lower of:
(a) any cap defined by reference to a fixed amount in the guarantee; and
(b) the amount which the trustees are reasonably satisfied that the guarantor could meet, if called upon.
- The certified realisable amount can be lower than the amount covered by the guarantee, enabling trustees to change the realisable amount each year without having to formally amend the terms of the guarantee.
- The trustees must also take account of the likely impact of the immediate insolvency of all the employers, other than the guarantor where that guarantor is also an employer. Trustees should not place value on a guarantor’s investments in the scheme employer unless they are confident that value would survive employer insolvency. Careful consideration is required to assess the impact of employer insolvency on the guarantor, as the value of the guarantor could be impacted by numerous factors.
- While the PPF recognises that trustees are not specifically required to obtain a full covenant assessment of the guarantor, a detailed review, in some form will often likely be necessary.
We believe that Trustees and employers should now be considering these issues to ensure compliance with the PPF’s deadline of 31 March 2015. Our pension advisory team are experienced Chartered Accountants who have provided covenant assessments and contingent asset certifications to a significant number of schemes and we are happy to explore the updated requirements in more detail with you. Please feel free to contact us on 02033 977 755 or email us at info@rossboyd.co.uk to discuss further.

Planning is a vital process for any business. Mapping out what your business’ objectives are and how they’re going to be achieved is the first step on the road to success. While formal business planning tends to mean ending up with a large unwieldy document, which often doesn’t offer much value to the small agile growing business, it’s important to remember, as Benjamin Franklin said “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail”. However, creating a quality concise strategic plan supported by accurate and practical workings for your business is now easier than ever before.
With rapid changing markets and the introduction of much improved tablets, smartphones and software, both the need to and the opportunities to capture, create and communicate business plans, in straightforward, innovative and engaging ways, are vast. It’s also important to remember that it’s really about the planning process rather than the number of pages in the output plan. SME investors typically want a plan less than 10 pages.
For the SME market, there are a number of software applications that can shake up how your business plans are created and monitored. For example, Business Plan Pro includes both an online or desktop planning tool which contains hundreds of sample business plans and thousands of industry profiles to support your plan. Financial forecasts are made easier for you by providing integrated financial spreadsheet software that allows you to simply plug in the numbers with forecast calculations being done for you. Of course, if you put rubbish in you will probably get rubbish out, but an experienced business planer will offer real insights and real QA. Ross Boyd Limited have supported the preparation and review of thousands of plans; and we have a team with real practical business, tax, accounting and marketing experience.
Another great piece of accounting software, is Xero, simple and easy to use and available online it really works well for small businesses. Ross Boyd Limited have actively helped many SME clients make the transition to Xero and other systems for better and more user friendly financial management. CrunchBoards, a Xero add-on, takes your financial information further. It allows you to create dynamic data analysis and forecasting to support you’re planning process. This is an innovative software tool which gives you control over how data is analysed and presented and, as it’s a Cloud application, you can use it anywhere, be it in the office or on the go from your smartphone.
Even with all the technology and easy to use software available to produce your plans, business planning and forecasting can still seem like a daunting process. However, regardless of the stage your business is at, whether you want to enter new markets, acquire a new business, refinance or simply improve your profitability, it is difficult to do it successfully without taking the time to stand back from the day to day activities and plan it out. Our team at Ross Boyd Limited understands this and we have the proven track record in business and strategic planning to assist you in developing the right plan for your business, using the latest products and technology.

31 January is only a couple of weeks away and many taxpayers have still to complete their tax return. If that includes you action is required. Here are some tips
1. Submit on time to save penalties
The deadline for filing your 2013-14 tax return online is 31 January 2015. The deadline was 31 October 2014 for a paper filing and so if you have not already completed your return you must file online. If HMRC do not receive your return online by 31 January 2015 you will receive an automatic £100 penalty. After that the penalties can escalate quite quickly with £10 per day penalties commencing if your return is more than 3 months late.
If you have not registered online you should do this as soon as possible as it can take time to get the relevant codes and reference numbers for online filing.
2. Make sure you claim the right expenses
The general rule is that all expenditure incurred wholly and exclusively for the purpose of the trade are allowable for tax relief against income earned in your business.
HMRC’s helpsheet on “How to calculate your taxable profits” includes a reminder of the typical expenses that maybe relevant for your business.
Using a qualified tax adviser or accountant will help you ensure that you meet all your legal obligations. In many cases they can help you reduce your tax liability by ensuring all relevant expenditure is claimed.
3. Ensure you count tax already paid
If you receive bank interest and you are not registered to receive your interest gross, 20% tax will usually have been deducted at source and this should be claimed back on your tax return.
Your bank will generally have sent you an interest certificate after 5 April 2014 or they may detail your interest receipts on your bank statement or savings book. Ensure that you include the correct gross or net figure when completing your return. Check with your bank if you are unsure.
4. Utilise mileage allowance payments for your car
If you use your own car for business purposes and an employee you can claim 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles and 25p per mile thereafter. If you get reimbursed for less than these figures, for example 40p per mile, you can claim relief for the balance on your tax return.
If you carry a passenger your employer can pay an additional 5p per mile tax free but you cannot claim this on your return unless your employer is paying it.
5. Get relief from donations
When you make a donation to charity they will be able to claim back basic rate tax on the amount donated, if you confirm that the payment is being made under gift aid.
If you are a higher rate tax payer you can claim additional relief at your highest rate, either 20% or 25%. If you pay no tax this year you will have to pay the amount that the charity has claimed back.
6. Avoid interest charges for being late
Pay your tax on time to avoid interest charges on the amount you owe. If you have not paid your balancing payment 28 days after it is due then you will be charged a 5% surcharge on any balance owing. If this is still outstanding six months later a further surcharge will become due.
If you are unable to pay your tax on time contact HMRC and seek a time to pay arrangement. Interest will still be charged but you may be able to avoid the 5% surcharge if an arrangement is agreed and adhered to.
