For years many people have doubted the Northern Ireland football team and their lack of goal scoring skills! Nonetheless this year was big deal for them as they ‘gelled’ their hair and polished the football boots to make their first ever appearance in a UEFA Euro football tournament.
The Green and White Army #GAWA left Belfast’s George Best City airport on the 30th May for their first training camp knowing the iconic former NI player himself would be so proud of them. The first match against Poland didn’t go as planned with a one nil defeat however this did not stop the NI team from succeeding. As the saying goes “second time lucky’’. NI went on to beat Ukraine with a two nil defeat and the celebrations went on all night accompanied by the adopted anthem of “WILL GRIGGS ON FIRE’’. Keeping the momentum high did hit home slightly when NI lost their third match against Germany. This however did not stop the “dare to dream’’ as they made it to the last 16 of the group even after a close defeat. The dream ended on the 25th June with a heartbreaking own goal defeat against Wales. On that occasion the best team lost! Nevertheless, the fans continued to show amazing support which really does make them “the best fans in the world.’’
England on the other hand with a population of 53 million were still determined that they would go further. As the well-known retail company put it on the 27th June there really was “an unexpected baggage alert” as England too where knocked out of the Euros at the final 16 stage by the mighty Iceland (population 325,000).
